In total, 30 cities from 16 Member States competed for the 2022 European
Capital of Smart Tourism title, out of which 7 shortlisted cities were
selected for the second stage of the competition. The shortlisted cities
were invited to present their candidatures in front of a number-member
Jury, comprising representatives from the European Commission DG Internal
Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, members of the European
Parliament and experts in the field of smart tourism.

Bordeaux and València impressed the European Jury not only with their
exemplary achievements across all four categories of the competition, but
also with their impressive programmes of activities they intend to
implement in 2022 and their capacity to act as a role model for other
cities.

Bordeaux and València will be taking over from the current European
Capitals of Smart Tourism, Málaga and Gothenburg at the start of the next
year. Both Málaga and Gothenburg have been excellent European Capitals of
Smart Tourism and role models for the rest of Europe to follow in the
footsteps of their smart tourism practices.
