Thanks, Juanjo, for the clarification.
All makes sense -- my question was mostly related to timing. I thought 
that the intention of the project extension was to keep the current set of 
GEs stable and properly supported until the end of the year under the 
FI-Core contract, regardless of internal business decisions within the 
individual companies. But I understand now that my interpretation was 
wrong.

Hi Alex,

  I guess you mean that your level 1-2-3 support of GEs would not be 
subject to the terms of the FI-Core contract ... without meaning that the 
support would be abruptly stopped.

  It is expected that GEri products are strategic for their GEri owners 
and that they will not simply abandon the support to developers adopting 
the technology.   Indeed, one of the benefits of contributing a GEri as 
part of FIWARE for the corresponding GEri owner would be the connection to 
a growing community of developers which are providing feedback about 
usage, etc.

  Or is IBM planning to stop development and support of the GEris it is 
contributing like Proton because the FI-Core contract finishes?

  Note that quality of support to the community of developers is one of 
the parameters that the FIWARE TC will be measuring regularly.   This may 
mean that a FIWARE GEri may loose the "FIWARE" label and become replaced.  
 It doesn't make sense having a product as reference implementation of a 
FIWARE GE if that product gets discontinued (may be not formally but in 
practice) when there are several other organizations out there willing to 
contribute similar products as FIWARE GEris (i.e., committing the support 
needed to be considered as such without requesting funding).

  Bottom line, at the end of the day we will found what 
companies/organizations are willing to keep contributing to the 
sustainability of the FIWARE OS community, that meaning they commit to 
support of a growing community of developers adopting their technology as 
part of FIWARE, because they consider this part of their business strategy 
(or their core research CV in the case of academia organizations) or not.

I managed to talk to Juanjo today for a while and one of the things I 
checked with him was the end dates of the chapters. As you showed interest 
in knowing this, the summary is:
The Technical Chapters stop at the end of September 
The activities that remain active until Dec/2016 are coordination, the 
FIWARE LAb nodes, dissemination, success stories and the like
