Hi all,

The new Installation and Configuration Guide will be ready on Monday SOB. The new User and Programmers Guide will be ready most likely on Monday as well; I think we can “release” it with some minor sections in a “to be done” status, nevertheless the definitive version won’t be ready until Tuesday or Wednesday.

however, please bear in mind that the documentation in the catalogue is not up-to-date and that several smes are wishing to install it (wrong or correct this does not matter too much) and following the current installation guidelines the installation does not work as reported in several emails from smes.

We don't understand how this message about Telefónica discontinuing support of Cosmos has been disseminated. Let me clarify:

* Cosmos continues being the product that Telefónica supports as implementation of the Big Data enabler. In fact, last months Telefónica released a number of components/tools that are helping growth of the “Cosmos ecosystem”, targeted to reinforce integration with other relevant FIWARE GEs:
* Cygnus, for historical context data persistence.
* Tidoop-ext, allowing using CKAN open data as input data for Hadoop.
* Tidoop-mr, a library of general purpose MapReduce jobs ready to be used.
* Even, we have moved to an OAuth2-based authentication and authorization for those REST APIs exposed in Hadoop.
* Cosmos, as a live product, continuously evolves and this means changes. Sustainability of the whole product is one of the key aspects in mind when taking decisions about his evolution. In this respect, one of the changes we have introduced in Cosmos is about adopting Openstack’s Sahara as the core of the "Hadoop as a Service" engine of the Cosmos GE, replacing a development that Telefónica had made supporting that functionality when nothing like Sahara was available. Reasons for this change are several, but the most important ones are:
* Sahara natively integrates with Openstack, the virtualization infrastructure used in FIWARE, therefore the "Hadoop as a Service" engine would be much better integrated with OpenStack-based clouds like the FIWARE Lab. Based on DevStack, we will be also available to support this "Hadoop as a Service" functionality standalone (without requiring to deploy and setup a complete Cloud) on a number of dedicated servers.
* Sahara offers at least the same functionality offered by the initial software to support "Hadoop as a Service" functionality developed by Telefónica. That part of the product was fine when no technologies like Sahara were available. Now, it has no sense to continue with it, and it is more interesting for us (and the community of developers) to contribute to Sahara, reinforcing sustainability in the longer term..
* Anyways, our experience says most SME and startups just need Hadoop for performing data analysis. Deploying the "Hadoop as Service" functionality is only required by a few of them. For those who do not require to deploy that service, even installing Sahara has no sense since that would be as killing flies with cannons. As part of our support, Telefónica is recommending these SMEs/startups who don't require a "Hadoop as a Service" functionality to go for any of the following two options:
* To use the shared Hadoop cluster available at FIWARE Lab. This global instance has no 24x7 support nor production-like SLAs as it happens with the rest of the FIWARE Lab service. However, Telefónica's team is committed to provide its best to support in time, whenever issues are reported. We believe that the performance for this support is good.
* If the above is not enough and you are looking for a production environment, then you will need to install Hadoop in your own infrastructure by using any of the available distributions. In this case, Telefónica is ready to support users on installing Hadoop as well.
* Replacing the "Hadoop as a Service" engine doesn't affect at all how applications performing map-reduce bigdata analysis is performed with Cosmos. After all, in the new like the previous version, developers use the Hadoop APIs (they may also rely on the rest of additional APIs/tools we are creating as part of Cosmos, check the first bullet, but none of them has been discontinued).
* For those few SME and startups willing to became a service provider and aiming offering Hadoop As A Service, the new Cosmos "Hadoop as a Service" engine based on Sahara is the right solution.
* The same infrastructure you envisioned for previous versions of Cosmos is still valid for Sahara.
* Regarding the installation, there are several distributions available making the task relatively easy.
* We can support SMEs/startups on installing the new version of Cosmos relying on Sahara as the Hadoop as a Service engine.

Bottom line and, as you can see, Cosmos continues being supported.
