We at PCH INNOVATIONS explore the intersections between technology, society and art, with an aim to deeply understand the momentum of the disruptive changes sweeping through almost every sector. We decode the patterns we find and help our clients navigate an uncertain world with conviction. We pursue these goals through a combination of active sensemaking, radical creativity, prototyping, testing, storytelling and constant exchange within our broader network.

Our work in the mobility sector shows us that a major upheaval of value chains is currently underway, a change that has the potential to completely reshape the entire industry. (Value chains consist of a hierarchy, starting from the bottom with the harvesting of raw materials, and ascending to the point of sale to customers at the very top. They describe the overall picture of an industry, as well as illustrating how companies position themselves in regards to each other and to their customers.)

Established value chains are being challenged by a powerful trend in digitalization. New players are gaining huge momentum by 'cutting out the middle man' and choosing to offer services directly to their customers. They accomplish this by placing heavy emphasis on maximum user experience and minimum friction, while carving out a space unoccupied by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) or actual service providers. The clearest example is the meteoric rise of UBER, but this trend can also be found in food delivery services or Amazon’s latest business ventures.

In this regard, digitalization is primarily driven by the ability to deeply understand human needs and problems, and less by the proactive refinement of the product itself. The needs that must be fulfilled by mobility within cities are fairly clear: People need to get to work, take the groceries and other goods home, visit one another and be empowered to take part in a vibrant city life.

These basic requirements must also strike a balance with economic and environmental considerations, including affordability, keeping the air clean, complying with climate regulations, as well as encouraging social equality and peace within urban areas. These particular problems will become increasingly prominent in the coming years. The cities of the future are faced with a choice: they can wait for service providers to address the needs of the people, or they can take the initiative themselves and shape their specific ecosystem.

With this talk, I propose a condensed typology of three clusters of developments until 2030 to illustrate needs, challenges and roles of actors within these city clusters.

I aim to encourage cities to seize this coming opportunity to improve their citizens’ quality of life and treat urban mobility as a complex, delicately balanced ecosystem. Massive changes are ahead if shifts occur in the way we predict, and we are looking forward with great optimism to finally see new and innovative solutions to old and familiar problems!

Dr. Michael Mischke is originally a boy scout and translated these skills and his enthusiasm into studies of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Sociology and Engineering Psychology. He wrote his PhD in a contract for AUDI AG on handwriting recognition and multimodal interfaces for cars.

After setting up an internal service agency for HMI in the Volkswagen Group Research and altogether 10 years of industrial experience he left the corporate world to become a Berlin based Strategist and Storyteller for Human Machine Interaction, focusing on ecogood economy, digital networks, online collaboration, urbanization and mobility.

Michael joined PCH INNOVATIONS in 2015, leading long term projects and focusing on urbanization, innovation facilitation and strategy development for mayor brands.
