Spain has emerged as the leader in the latest European Research Council (ERC) proof of concept funding round, securing 12 out of 66 grants awarded. This success showcases a range of research areas including cancer treatment and advanced vaccine development. 
Spain's achievement signals a rebound in its scientific endeavors after significant budget cuts post the 2008 financial crisis. Spain has risen to become the third-largest participant in the EU's Horizon Europe research program, receiving €2.34 billion thus far. The positive outcome is indicative of Spain's ongoing efforts to rebuild and restructure its scientific landscape.
