[**Science Business**](https://sciencebusiness.net/ "Science Business") published a report, marking the 40th anniversary of the EU's Framework Programmes for research and innovation.

**Origins and Evolution of the Framework Programme**
• An initial push towards European cooperation in science emerged post-World War II, with the CERN in 1951, the Euratom Treaty for nuclear research and the establishment of organizations like COST in 1971.

• The Programme began in 1984 with 10 European countries collaborating on joint R&D efforts. It has awarded more than 127,000 grants to 85,000 participants.

**Horizon Europe and Beyond**
• Horizon Europe focuses on open science, innovation, and addressing global challenges. 
• The report *highlights ongoing debates* and planning *for* the next Programme *(FP10)*, including budget considerations, the balance between basic and applied research, and the governance.
