        *   recommended length: 1-3 pages
     *   Context Information management
        * info to be provided: Does your application exhibit a “context-aware” behaviour? How do you plan to use the FIWARE Context Broker (Orion open source reference implementation)? What type of entities and attributes, following the NGSI model, are relevant to your application?
        *   recommended length: 1-3 pages

Subject: Great opportunity at the Mobile World Congress 2016 for FIWARE entrepreneurs developing applications for Smart Cities and Smart Agrifood

Dear all,

   I would like to share what we believe could be a exciting opportunity for many of the startups/SMEs involved in the FIWARE accelerator project, particularly those dealing with development of applications for the Smart Agrifood domain or for cities (i.e., management of city services or innovative services for citizens/business in a city)

  Telefónica and KT (Korean Telecom) are leading a project within GSMA which has to do with pushing for the definition of common platform APIs and data models enabling context information management (IoT data being part of the context information that is captured through sensor networks). It is proposed that these standard APIs and data models be adopted in the platforms provided by mobile operators in order to support interoperability and portability of smart context-aware applications across platforms from different mobile operators.

  For your info in case you didn't know, GSMA is the organization who designed the GSM standard, more info can be found at http://www.gsma.com/aboutus/history. We believe that collaboration among mobile operators towards a common standard for context information (including IoT data) management could bring a significant impact the same way the GSM network did.

  Nicely, some FIWARE technologies have been able to be positioned as basis for the standards to be adopted. Particularly FIWARE NGSI is being proposed as the basis for publishing, querying or subscribing to context information (which includes but is not limited to IoT data). Besides, it seems like our work regarding ability to publish FIWARE NGSI query data resources in CKAN is also going to be adopted.

  The interesting news is that several showcases are planned to be implemented in this GSMA project targeted to demonstrate the possibilities of FIWARE NGSI and these showcases will be presented at the next Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in 2016 !!.

  Smart Cities and Smart Agrifood have been selected as two areas for which showcases will be built. In both cases, it is intended that concrete applications are showcased and indeed the data models they require to execute be standardized.

  This brings a great opportunity for entrepreneurs that get involved to showcase their FIWARE-based applications in an event of the magnitude of the MWC !!

  As you can imagine, both Telefónica and KT as well as the GSMA and other mobile operators who may join the project would also perform marketing/dissemination of the showcases which would also benefit the entrepreneurs !! I believe that it may bring opportunities for commercial collaboration between you and some FIWARE platform providers or potential customers (cities, farms, etc)

  We need to move fast and be able to select a first round of applications for these showcases before mid June. The goal would be to have a first prototype of them running approximately in October. Of course, we would like to run these selection considering the startups/SMEs selected within the FIWARE Acceleration Programme and other startup/SMEs which have approched us will be welcome to apply. We will try to engage some of the cities linked to the OASC initiative<http://connectedsmartcities.eu/open-and-agile-smart-cities/> for the showcase on Smart Cities. We need to find out how we can engage some farms for the Smart Agrifood showcase. Suggestions are welcomed.

  Because of the nature of showcases (exchange of context information, part of which and significantly should come from the IoT space) goal is to select applications who at least use the Context Broker GE (Orion) and the IoT Backend Device Management GE (IDAS). In other words, IoT should be relevant in the application and context-awareness behaviour as well. Usage of other GEs like Wirecloud, GEs in the advanced web-based UI chapter, etc are welcome.

  We would like to carry out a candidate selection during the FIWARE Developers Week in Vienna. Startups/SMEs who see this as an opportunity are welcome to attend and perform a presentation, otherwise we will judge based on available information. It would be an excellent opportunity for attending the FIWARE Developers Week we are running in Vienna where FIWARE experts will be able to provide some technical coaching on how to use the FIWARE GEs that are relevant for the GSMA showcase.

  We will organize two confcalls to give you more details about this GSMA project and the process to follow. One this Monday May 18th from 09:30-11:00. Another one on Wednesday 20 from 09:30am-11:00am. We can use powwownow: PIN: 072704, local dial-in phone numbers at: http://pdf.powwownow.com/pdf/USA_en_pwn-dial-in-numbers.pdf). Those who wish to keep informed about the details in the following days, please subscribe to the list fiware-gsma-showcases-info at lists.fiware.org<mailto:fiware-gsma-showcases-info at lists.fiware.org> You can subscribe to the mailing list here:

  A clarification to avoid misunderstandings: No extra-funding will be given away to entrepreneurs involved in development of the showcases. Neither Telefónica nor KT receive any funding for their participation in this project. We assume that the degree of visibility and exposure not only to media but potential customers will be relevant enough for potential applicants.

  A last note. The Mobile World Congress (MWC) will be run typically end of February or beginning of March 2016. While we will run a first selection of applications now in order to get a first prototype in October, we also plan to play a second round of selections in November. We expect that some additional startups/SMEs may be added to the showcase to be presented at the MWC.

  Cheers,

  Juanjo Hierro
