Dear all,

Some personal comments regarding the review report we received last week based on the review we had end of July.

First of all EC promised the review report for the 20th of August and we received it the 21st, so really on time and this detail emphasizes the critical phase we are and that EC wants to push more and more for industrial results and successful adoption of FIWARE results from the market.

Second point, as expected, some of the GEs will not be funded anymore. The list provided at the end of the report is not so clear for me, especially the Cloud part (recommendation to be closer from OpenStack version without clear statement that funding will be stopped). During the review we had to face a recurrent question: what is fiwareness for a GE to decide if the GE is fully align with FIWARE ambition? The vision of EC is that fiwareness is a certain level of integration, not only using NGSI because NGSI cannot provide answers for everything so for IoT chapter, full integration of all GEs with NGSI and interaction with other GEs from other chapters is clearly the good point. I would thank you all for efforts done on that specific part to demonstrate that what we propose is consistent.
Some other GEs are challenged to show their integration with NGSI or with other GEs to demonstrate that FIWARE is more a platform than a collection of isolated components.
Regarding this second point, it is also clear that EC has found a way to challenge us regarding the Open Source community .If we want sustainable GEs we have to maintain support and roadmap for the GEs in the Open Source Community, maybe not with the same level of involvement (it was what we claim that without funding, partners could have less resources to accelerate the development). If a partner stops the development because of funding, EC could claim doing the right choice because this GE would not be sustainable at the end of the programme.

Third point: difficulties with FIWARE Lab. We agreed to restart a pre-production environment (something like the previous testbed but EC does not want us to use testbed again) to deploy and test a new version of the platform to have no impact on end-users like it was the case since February this year for many changes.
Federation of nodes for FIWARE Lab is challenged because a failure of an unique instance of IDM impacts all nodes and end-users. I think this point will be discuss again inside the project to set an answer to EC.
The Open Call, originally planned to maintain FIWARE Lab environment because many of the nodes should stop their contribution at the end of the XiFi project (so end of September) will be partially dedicated to future commercial platforms that means that proposals have to integrate the "use for free" part of FIWARE Lab but provide also a clear view of the commercial platform that will be launched based on FIWARE GEs

Four point: I am personally disappointed to read that Robotics GE will have no more funding. I was expected, after discussion with Juanjo, that Robotics could integrate IoT Chapter. They have already a first integration with Orion through NGSI but this clearly not enough for EC. I think we will come back to EC with another proposal also for this specific case.

Five point: a general issue is the marketing plan for the Open Source Community and in general to support sustainability of FIWARE. The point is to have a consistent communication and promotion of FIWARE to explain that we have enough developers in the OS Community, that GE have the right level of maturity, the added value of the platform, etc... At the project level we have to deal quickly with this issue too.

We now also that EC has collected from A16 (Accelerators) the GEs used by SMEs and their feedback on the industrial maturity of the softwares. We are waiting for this spreadsheet (EC has to anonymize the answer because A16 do not want we can ask more details to some SMEs...) As soon as I have more details on that point for IoT GEs, I will give you the feedback.

Last but not least: be ready for the amendment because EC wants a new DoW with changes based on this review report for the 10th of September, so this is tomorrow!

BR
Thierry

PS: I have just received information about the new H2020 work programme (2016-2017) with an action dedicated to FIWARE, it seems for OS Community and support fo FIWARE Lab and communication. This point was lightly announced by Jesus Villasante during the review but this is now written in the Work Programme. In addition there is a global recommendation for projects to use FIWARE for further proposals.

Dear all,

I forward to you the report and outcome letter of the first FI-Core project review.

I haven't had time to check its contents ... I'm forwarding it directly without further delay.

We will come back to you in the event there is a need to implement some action.

Please note that I'm currently on holidays in Miami, so I won't be able to respond quickly to your emails. Miguel is at the office. I'm coming back on August 26th.

  Best regards,

-- Juanjo Hierro
