Dear all,

Thank you Jose for the introduction,

As Jose explained, I am the project manager on the GSMA IOT Big Data Ecosystem project, who, together with Aruna Srinivasan who is the executive director, and Steve Doyle who is our technical expert, make up the bulk of the team working with the operators on this project and it is a pleasure to meet (virtually) all of you. Below we have detailed a quick introduction to the project, as well our proposed contributions to the NGSIv2 specification.

The GSMA IoT Big Data Ecosystem project was launched in January 2015 with the aim of developing an ecosystem which allows the sharing of context data, including IoT data, from multiple sources using standardised data models and APIs. The ultimate goal is to allow developers, including operators if they choose, to monetise this data by developing innovative products and services. Telefonica and KT are active operator participants on the project and through Telefonica we have been introduced to FIWARE/NGSI2 as a potential method of API specification.

At the Shanghai project meeting on 14th July 2015 there was a lively discussion within the project group about the suitability of the current NGSI2 specification for IoT big data applications.
The GSMA would like to communicate its perspectives on the IoT Big Data Ecosystem project:

· The interests of the operator community will best be secured by developing a viable developer community

· Developers will require a solution which features

o High flexibility

o Ease of use including simplicity of programming

o Highly efficient operation - particularly being able to obtain exactly the data required by the application (no more and no less)

o High speed query and application response

o Ability to support a wide range of use cases, data mash-ups etc

· What is created during the period between July 2015 and March 2016 should establish a technical blueprint supporting potential commercial services that could be introduced by operators and developers beyond March 2016

· Learnings from other programmes within the GSMA and also wider industry API best practice approaches should be applied to the IoT Big Data Ecosystem project
The GSMA is happy to consider NGSI2 for the IoT Big Data project and GSMA platform, however we require several areas to be addressed before we would deem it as meeting the goals set out above These areas include:

· NGSI2 is not designed to efficiently support complex data relationships such as are relevant to the use cases identified for the IoT Big Data project. The NGSI2 specification effectively models hierarchical data entities with simplistic data filtering mechanisms rather than providing an efficient method by which complex data relationships are

o Stored and accessed efficiently within the data store

o Support ad-hoc queries efficiently with the sort of rich expressions (including geographical expressions) that can reasonably be predicted for use in applications leveraging the IoT Big Data ecosystem

o Allow developers to effectively specify their exact requirements for data to be returned within a query response

o Handle the changing data sets which will be present when live IoT data feeds are integrated into the IoT Big Data environment

· The GSMA has worked with other operators including AT&T, Vodafone, Orange and DT on other programmes which have stressed the need for the following on API services. Input provided to NGSI2 is therefore based on best practice inputs and recommendations on consistency with other mature API programmes

o Ensuring API services reflect best practice approaches of RESTful APIs and use of HATEOAS (such as OneAPI/ OMA RESTful Network APIs including RCS)

o Allowing API services to be easily consumed particularly from JavaScript web client environments through simplifying use from for example JavaScript / jQuery (Mobile Connect)

o Ensuring the ability to receive data feeds from web client environments using websockets (RCS)
The GSMA positively acknowledges that the NGSI2 specification is considered open by FIWARE, as it is essential that there is a real process for input to be accepted from others in order for the specification to be supported industry-wide. This is particularly important since the GSMA is required to represent the collective interests of GSMA operator members and associate members and must also ensure that it promotes solutions which are acceptable and available from multiple vendors.

The GSMA is committed to collaborating with players, such as FIWARE, in order to develop technological standards to meet industry-wide requirements. In this regard, the GSMA requires that there is an open and collaborative process so that a mutually acceptable NGSI2 specification is reached. However, if NGSI2 does not evolve to meet the requirements of the project, the GSMA may choose to develop API specifications and platform implementations which are not linked to NGSI2.

Over the next weeks, the GSMA will be working on contributions to NGSI2 to address the areas set out above, and looks forward to collaborating with FIWARE to improve the NGSI2 specification. Ahead of the detailed work, we welcome feedback the points we have raised in this communication.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Kind regards,

Importance: High

Dear colleagues,

The GSMA (Mobile Operators Association) IOTBDE project (currently sponsored by Telefónica and KT) is interested in contributing to the FIWARE-NGSI-v2 specification. I think these are excellent news in order to augment the relevancy of our work and its possibilities for further standardization.

Please let me introduce Craig Aldridge and Aruna Srinivasan who are the project managers at GSMA, who will give us more details on the IOTBDE project and related targets.

Thanks,

All the Best
