the context of the EIP on Smart Cities and Communities

Hi Stefano,

Since you seems to be the one who arrives earlier tomorrow and I'm already in Brussels, I suggest that you call me on my mobile right after landing and before taking the taxi. I'm in the NH Atlanta hotel so that I could be there in Beaulieu in aprox 40 mins since you call me.

Otherwise, please propose some time and I'll be there.

My understanding is that Thierry will arrive later.

Pier or Pascal: are you planning to attend ?

I received a call from Arian, who very much welcome the meeting btw, with some feedback he got from a conversation with officers from Mrs Maloney's Unit:

  1. They are not interested about technology research. They expect that the technology is already available. We should emphasize this aspect.
  2. They are interested about platforms that are being offered comercially already, i.e., platforms that a City can already use to set up smart solutions. Examples about concrete commercial activities under way by some of the partners, particularly in the area of Smart Cities are welcome. We from Telefonica are ready to bring clear messages accompanied by reference examples. I hope that others can bring them as well to the meeting.
  3. They are very interested about "business models" around the platform, e.g., how the city can bring a platform which offers open data so application providers can bring competing solutions which rely on the published data and make business out of selling applications for smartphones. Ability to support multiple business models and openess/innovation should be emphasized.

Some messages I was planning to convey:

  1. Building a sustainable ecosystem is cornestone. No city alone can build an ecosystem on its own. We also have to seek for standards and, again, no city can build the standards alone. The EIP on Smart Cities and Communities is strategic and FI-WARE/FI-Lab can be instrumental.
  2. Cities already have taken a decision to connect to FI-Lab in Spain, Italy and Finland Interests from other regions.
  3. Liason with CKAN in place. Given the fact that CKAN has became a "de facto" standar for publication of open data (and not precisely in the research space), this will have very much relevance.
  4. Promotion activities driven by professionals of communication (Ogilvy) with relevant investments on communication/dissemination.
  5. FI-WARE Cloud architecture enables to play global (i.e., global FI-WARE instances as with the case of FI-Lab) but coping with local regulations (i.e., data to be kept locally within a given country/region). This is based on the concept of regions/zones that the FI-WARE Cloud architecture will support (including private zones).
  6. Using FI-WARE and connecting their data sources and smart city systems to FI-Lab and commercial FI-WARE instances in parallel, cities have the opportunities to combine experimentation/trials of innovative ideas while in parallel having a "production-level" environment where ready for service to citizens. Use of FI-WARE in both environments warrants portability of experimental applications once they demonstrate matureness.
  7. EIB (Executive Industry Board) has been put in place showing that major industry players are there to take action (this is very much related with point 2 above).
  8. Our footprint will not be limited to Europe. Actually developing plans in collaboration with the EC to push the FI-PPP beyond Europe, starting with Brazil.
  9. Good response to FI-WARE Challenge on Smart Cities shows that entrepreneurs are eager to showcase their ideas in an ecosystem like the one we are building around FI-Lab.

I'm preparing a presentation along these ideas that I'll get ready for discussion tomorrow before our reharsal. I will incorporate some videos during the presentation as to make it more dynamic appealing as well as to emphasize the product-oriented approach. If Orange, Engineering or others can send me a slide on their commercial activities, i.e. point 2, along today that would be rather appreciated. If you have additional messages you believe it would be worth to convey, they will be very much welcomed.

  Cheers,

-- juanjo

Hi,

I don't know if the mailing list are already working but just in case I copy Thierry and Stefano directly since I recall they were interested in attending this meeting with Mrs Colette Maloney. Maybe also Pier and Pascal, so I copy them also directly.

  Cheers,

  Thanks for your response.

I do not have specific plans for a travel to Brussels in January but sure that I can make it if you can confirm the meeting since this is strategic for us.

My only constraint is that it should be some day between the 13rd and 23rd of January, preferably Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday but I can adapt.

  I look forward your response,

Thank you very much in advance for your understanding.

Subject: Meeting to further explore opportunities to use FI-LAB/FI-WARE in the context of the EIP on Smart Cities and Communities

Dear Colette,

It was very nice that we meet at the Smart City World Expo last week during the session on "EU Smart Cities and Communities".

As I told you, we would be very glad if we could arrange a face to face meeting in Brussels during which we can share with you details about current developments in FI-WARE and FI-Lab. As I explained to you, FI-WARE is not the regular EU FP7 research project but rather a project that is targeted to deliver results in a shorter term.

One of the areas where we have identified opportunities for early adoption is that of Smart Cities. It is not just the fact that FI-WARE technologies are particularly suitable, but the fact that FI-Lab can be instrumental in setting up an open innovation ecosystem capable to attract cities and entrepreneurs and help to meet each other. Several cities have already started to connect their facilities and open data platforms to FI-Lab (Malaga, Santander, Sevilla and Zaragoza in Spain, Trento and Torino in Italy). Others are approaching us with real interest to join as well.

We will be in Brussels on December 18 for a review of the project and maybe it could be a good opportunity to meet on December 19th. Do you have any available time slot that date ? That would be really great.

  Thanks in advance,

-- Juanjo Hierro
