Just very quick reactions on your mail, Juanjo;

a) No problem from my side to be contact point for some people if we define clear messages for the proposers (in fact for some reason the EC has already given my name to some people working in proposals where Atos is not at all present)

b) For the operation of FIWARE Lab nodes I need to talk to Clara and we have to check with the other people of Atos managed Operations what could be offered under that schema. I wonder if the same approach could be applied to the GE support and evolution; since the EC may expect some funding devoted to both GE and FIWARE Lab infrastructure plus a sustainability plan that includes funds from other sources (including business incomes) to cover both. This would allow us to save more money

c) Finally, I have seen that you have reserved 400K for COMMs for Ogilvy, If we agree on the other proposals to cover these activities, which makes a lot of sense since they are about community building, we could save even more money

Maybe all together would mean around 1 Meuro of savings and would keep our budget around 5M, which would be helpful in the evaluation process.

BR,

Subject: [Fiware-sustainability-proposal] Some updates regarding ICT-12.a calls

Hi,

  I have added Lanfranco to the list.

  I would like to update you on the conservations I have taken with Jesus during this week. Several and very detailed.

  First thing is that the EC very much welcome the approach that we were taking trying to convince that ALL proposals to the ICT-12.a call incorporate a budget to be assigned to the FIWARE Foundation which should incorporate a) resources for carrying out some sort of coordination of the activities and b) resources to be devoted to Press Office activities.

  As you know, the initial approach by the EC (and it seems like something they had communicated to people who were involved in the development of the different proposals) was that the proposal targeted to the ICT-12.a.iii goal was be the one that would take care of funding the Foundation and would also cover the budget needed to support the activities of the FIWARE Press Office. Somehow, they had the idea that the project coming out from ICT-12.a would work as kind of coordination project of the rest.

  I managed to convince Jesús that the approach should be different: all projects funded under each of the ICT-12.a objectives should provide funding to the activities to be run by the FIWARE Foundation, including coordination and communication activities. Jesus in turn discussed the topic with the rest of the members of the Unit and he then came back to me saying that they all agreed, therefore they will get in contact with all organizations they know that are preparing proposals to inform them that they would welcome incorporation of the Foundation in their respective proposals with the funding necessary to cover coordination activities as well as communication activities.

  We need to provide a contact name of a person who will take care of conversations with the different proposers on behalf of the FIWARE Foundation. This contact name will be communicated to the EC so that they can suggest it to proposers. As you know, I'm carrying out those conversations already but I'm happy to share the task. The major concern from the EC is that whoever is involved in conversations does not use it for the benefit of the corresponding company. I indeed didn't ask for involving Telefónica in any of the proposals prepared to sustain activities of the FIWARE Mundus, FIWARE iHub or FIWARE Accelerator programmes. But again, I don't have major issues sharing the task. One solution would be that of providing several contacts (e.g., Nuria, Stefano and me, whom from Orange?) and leave proposers to decide whom they want to contact. As far as we are all sync on messages to pass, and meet to follow-up or inform via email about progress from time to time, it should be fine.

  Regarding the proposal on ICT-12.a.iii (FIWARE evolution and sustainability), you can imagine that Jesús got surprised about the fact that we were going to go for a project requesting 6M€ of funding :-) BTW, the call text establishes that proposals may go from 2 up to 6 M€ (I thought that the upper limit was 5 M€ but apparently is 6 M€). My feedback after these conversations:

  * I believe Jesus understood the point about requesting that much funding although he raised the risk that we may be not selected if we go for that higher funding, overall if the proposal looks too much like some sort of continuation of FI-Core. On that matter, we have to highlight what is the value of the concrete activities we will carry out regarding evolution of FIWARE GEs and, of course, highlight the value of horizontal activities and processes that we want to keep for the FIWARE Open Source community (we have already defined a dedicated WP on this if you remember). I will come later with a specific message elaborating on this matter.
  * One issue has to do with the operation of FIWARE Lab nodes. I have the feeling that people at the EC doesn't care too much (or doesn't realize about the consequences) if the FIWARE Lab stops operations. They have the vision that organizations that will put in place FIWARE commercial nodes will take care of FIWARE Lab node operations on their own, which is something that makes sense to some extend. Is that something we would agree to? Certainly we are devoting a lot of funding to FIWARE Lab nodes operations in the proposal and maybe we only need to fund coordination activities as well as operation of FIWARE Lab nodes that may be transferred to the FIWARE Foundation as a mean for it to become self-sustainable (e.g., the FIWARE Foundation may offer a service targeted only to experimentation projects so the incomes may be used to allow sustainability of the Foundation). From Telefónica side, we would be fine transferring the operations of the Spanish FIWARE Lab node for that purpose (subject to an agreement with Red.es who is the owner of the physical infrastructure). I believe we have to think about an approach like this because if some counter-proposal arrives with such an approach, they may look much stronger than us (it may be perceived that we are just asking for funding that members of the FIWARE Core Industry Group need because otherwise they cannot maintain their nodes). I will also come later with a specific message elaborating on this matter.

  Best regards,

-- Juanjo
