[Fiware-tech-help] Absolute frustration getting started with FIWARE

Hello,

my name is Sara and I work for Encore Lab, a Spanish SME whose main activity
consists of deploying sensor networks in different contexts, getting data
from them and analyzing it so we give our clients useful information for
their business.

We heard about FIWARE and we thought it'd be a good platform to help us
creating web/mobile services for our clients or to manage our sensor
networks in a unified way, even allowing us to share information with other
developers and data producers/consumers.

But when I tried to start using it I just couldn't. I've been struggling
with philosophical considerations about the platform for the last two weeks.
I cannot find any document explaining how to proceed step by step. I went
through the catalogue with no success, I registered in the Fi-lab and
couldn't get anything done, I watched an endless list of videos and it's
just impossible. Everybody publishing stuff out there seems to think the
reader knows a lot of things about the platform and how to use it.

All I know now is that I need a Unix system to install all the GEs. No idea
about how to connect to a sensor (I succeeded on getting some data using the
code examples of the Quick Start for Programmers of the Orion Context Broker
documentation, why can't I do something similar with one of my nodes.?)

Another big mystery for me right now is how databases work here: are there
public ones linked to projects? Each programmer builds its own? Where are
they hosted.?

I really need some help with this, from knowing the system requirements to
install all the necessary GEs, which are the usual programming environments
supporting the APIs, how does the communication with the database happen...
Are there project examples I can compile and use as an example once I'm all
set up?

I'd really appreciate anything helping me not understanding how everything
should work but how it actually does from the perspective of somebody who
wants to start playing with the functionality to get an idea of the system.
Thank you very much. Kind regards,

Sara Madariaga
