> Among the 7 announced CSP plants under South African REIPPP Program, Kathu Solar Park is a 100MW CSP plant using parabolic trough technology with 4.5-hours molten-salt storage. Getting back to the history, the project had been awarded as one of the two preferred bidders in December 2014 during the 3rd round of REIPPPP by DoE. Led by French power company ENGIE, Kathu signed PPA with Eskom this May and started construction, expectedly, the plant will be operational in the second half of 2018.

> Kathu is the first CSP project that ENGIE has undertaken and is an impressive addition to its existing African energy portfolio. As Bruno Bensasson, CEO of the ENGIE Africa says, “The Kathu Solar Park project supports South Africa’s strategy of increasing the contribution of renewable power and also underlines our commitment to be a key partner in achieving sustainable energy generation in Africa.”
