Hi all, Let me report briefly on some very exciting recent developments. Over the last few weeks we had several very interesting discussions with key people from W3C. They have been watching the industry trend toward AR/VR and are now investigating how to best integrate this emerging technology into the Web. They have approached us as they see XML3D (the technology behind our 3D-UI GE) as a possible key component for integrating interactive and immersive 3D graphics into HTML. Over the past few years the WebUI chapter has developed many of the components that are needed for their vision (interactive 3D, initial AR support, image and geometry processing for dynamic scenes, real-time synchronization of scenes, efficient transport of scene data, etc.). More related work has been done in FIcontent on this topic. Coincidentally, WebUI is already working on integrating support for WebVR, the emerging new Mozilla/Google very low-level API for connecting to the Oculus Rift and other such devices. The spec for XML3D (see http://xml3d.org/xml3d/specification/latest/, already in W3C compatible format -- what a surprise :-) captures the core aspects within this area and could form the basis of much of this work. A comprehensive analysis of existing technology and the rationale for the design of XML3D will be published in a PhD thesis from my group in he coming weeks. The current plan discussed with W3C is as follows: They will internally give a presentation at the next W3C advisory board meeting to get official support for further activities. We have plans for a W3C workshop officially kicking of the topic within W3C and likely the founding of a new W3C Community Group specifically on that topic. In parallel we are also planning for a joint EU project proposal that could become a focus point for that work. Of course, it would be great to do much of that work in the context of FIWARE/WebUI and make sure that the results become part of our technology stack. To that end, it would help to get an OK from the TC to drive these activities forward. Maybe even some form of co-sponsorship from FIWARE for the inaugural workshop might be possible. DFKI is planning to co-organize it together with W3C already. Also, please contact me if you are interested in participating in such activities.
