Dear TSC,
I am forwarding you the request (please read it below) from Davide
Zerbetto, the Data Visualization GE owner, in order to incubate the new
GEri called Knowage. Please think at it as an official request. Few weeks
ago, during the Apps technical roadmap, Davide has introduced this new GEri
Knowage.

In his request, Davide well explained which are the pros of having a new
GEri and deprecating SpagoBI. I agree with him that having a new entry is
the cleanest option to add this new implementation.

I would ask you to give us a feedback about it. I'm not sure how this works
usually (e.g. if we need to set a vote to decide or what), but we would
like to close this issue asap to have all the Apps chapter and GE things on
their places (JIRA issues, and so).

How to proceed, then?

Regards,
Alessandro Portosa

Dear Juanjo
I'd like to come back to the discussion about SpagoBI and Knowage, and
whether it would be better renaming the GEri or creating a new one. We
deeply talked about it internally and agreed that creating a new GEri
would be the best option, obviously with an explicit reference between
SpagoBI and Knowage, declaring that Knowage is the new version of the
SpagoBI GEri.

In order to let final users understand this change, we sketched out the
process as follows:

1. we will shortly release (end of March/beginning of April) the first
Knowage version in github, after that we can create an entry in FIWARE
catalogue for Knowage in INCUBATED state, and move SpagoBI in SUPPORT
state. We will add all information into the catalogue to clarify that
Knowage will substitute SpagoBI and that the roadmap refers to Knowage;
2. once the migration is completed with all the FIWARE deliverables
(documentation, Docker image, Chef recipes, global instance…) , we will
state that Knowage is the new Data Visualization GEri while SpagoBI is just
a GEi: SpagoBI will remain in SUPPORT mode for some other months, to be
with users during the transition time;

3. After some months, SpagoBI will be deprecated.

This way the great change and improvement of the product will be more
evident and the end-user can expect relevant changes as he usually can have
between two major releases of a product.

Moreover, it is worth to note that Knowage will be released in two versions
(Community Edition - CE - and Enterprise Edition - EE). The CE (open and
for free) is the natural evolution of SpagoBI as new major release and
includes every topic of the FIWARE roadmap. The EE will provide additional
features for fee.

There are also some practical aspects to be considered:
1. issues on JIRA refer to SpagoBI, not to the Data Visualization GE; we
need to distinguish issues belonging to SpagoBI for support purposes and
issues belonging to Knowage for support and new features;
2. if we rename SpagoBI to Knowage in the catalogue, and users will look
for SpagoBI (using the "Filter" input on the left), they will not find
anything*.* This is confusing, in particular for users who already know
about SpagoBI in FIWARE.

Obviously, we are always available to discuss in a dedicated call about
this matter, showing you the new version of the product and even the
differences between CE/EE.
Thanks and best regards
Davide
