From pierangelo.garino at telecomitalia.it Fri May 4 09:12:16 2012 From: pierangelo.garino at telecomitalia.it (Garino Pierangelo) Date: Fri, 4 May 2012 09:12:16 +0200 Subject: [Fiware-i2nd] I: [Fiware-training] Update of the 'FI-PPP SW Architects Week' Agenda & guidelines for presentations In-Reply-To: <7E2CC038-BBCD-4A39-9E7B-6AC82AB04F98@tid.es> References: <7E2CC038-BBCD-4A39-9E7B-6AC82AB04F98@tid.es> Message-ID: Dear All, here are the proposed guidelines for both FI-WARE and UCP sessions at the educational weeks. Shortly we'll contact the people directly involved in the attendance to the weeks, in order to define the preparation of expected contributions. Agenda: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArcymbqnpOfkdGJqeEFlblNEUkdxdkl2NW1sM0FWUUE#gid=0 For FI-WARE GEs: Fi-WARE chapters are expected to present to the UCs attendees the basic concepts and the specific GEs to ease their exploitation within UC scenarios. Each chapter will prioritize those GEs to be delivered in FI-WARE first release and those with a higher rating score as provided by UCs at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqGGeaQGro3fdC1zSUdlVjJ2WldESHZmZU13bTdjT3c#gid=0 For the GEs presentations, the following structure is suggested: x) GE presentation (25-40') x.1) Overview and reference architecture (5') x.2) Basic concepts & Main Interactions (15-25') x.3) REST APIs & tools for developers (5-10') FI-WARE WP leaders are expected to clarify which specific GEs will be presented at each specific slot in the agenda at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArcymbqnpOfkdENHZjVoNEpYaUI4NDRRbEd5RjNPSnc#gid=0 For UCs: The overall idea is to present to the FI-WARE team a number of selected scenarios (x) to understand the applicability of FI-WARE GEs. The presentations can be as follows: 1 Description of Scenarios (x*20) 1.x.1 story-line (5') 1.x.2 High level description of the architecture (15') - Diagram with all the components (provided but the UC or not) involved in the scenario. - Role of each component and basic interactions. 2 Individual components description (technical approach, expectations, constraints) (60') 2.1 For the components to be developed by the UC: why they are domain specific & functionality in detail. 2.2 For FI-WARE components, expectations & constraints. Considering a total of 3-5 scenarios. UCs should generally request 120-160 min. At this point, standard 120' slots have been planned, but this can be modified depending on UCs requests. UCs may check/fill in with their details at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArcymbqnpOfkdENHZjVoNEpYaUI4NDRRbEd5RjNPSnc#gid=4 BR Pier Questo messaggio e i suoi allegati sono indirizzati esclusivamente alle persone indicate. From pierangelo.garino at telecomitalia.it Mon May 7 15:42:36 2012 From: pierangelo.garino at telecomitalia.it (Garino Pierangelo) Date: Mon, 7 May 2012 15:42:36 +0200 Subject: [Fiware-i2nd] Outcomes from WPL/WPA call and actions to be tackled Message-ID: Dear All, Here is a list of very important actions to be completed in the following days, which we cannot postpone for discussion in the PhC on Thursday this week, since we need to respect the deadlines for project deliverable production, and to provide the right information to Use Case Projects concerning the educational weeks. Please carefully read and check the expected involvement (especially Task Leaders should coordinate actions for their specific GE), then act accordingly as soon as possible (I have identified in brackets the expected owner of actions). ====================================== 1- Open Specifications: by the end of this week (i.e. by May 11!) we need to have the wiki pages ready. For what concerns I2ND, the following actions are required: . As the only 'official' delivery in first FI-WARE platform release is the Cloud Edge, its open specs have to be inserted (Henk, Serge) . The open specs of other three GEs are delivered, however it is necessary to give at least some examples of the kind of APIs the developers will find when these GEs are ready (second platform release, maybe something earlier than next year). (Chris, Thomas, Hans) . Practical notes: = For GEs not due by the first release, we'll exploit the concept of 'PRELIMINARY specs', so as we do not commit completely to provide interfaces which are not yest sufficiently stable. = At least an example of APIs per each GE needs to be provided. CDI at the moment is nearly ok, NetIC should convert the .doc into wiki page, and S3C needs to provide some actual APIs (I don't think there are some at the moment). = Our proposal to provide some sub-pages per each GE APIs when a single wiki page is too long has been accepted. See example of CDI specs where each sub-page (will) provide the list of APIs of a functional group of interfaces. Please adopt this style should you have too many APIs in a single page. = When RESTful APIs are not exposed, we have to justify the choice (which is usually due to the adoption of standardized interfacing styles for specific contexts, e.g. webIDL for CDI). ====================================== 2- Installation and Admin guide . We need to clarify what this deliverable should contain concerning CE. Finalisation of discussion going on among Miguel, Henk, myself to be achieved in the next couple of days. ====================================== 3- Unit testing plan. . The proposals we did in our feedback (our mail dated 13 April) were accepted, check that mail for details. . We have to implement in our backlog the required modifications, i.e. insert a new field in the ticket pointing to the how-to-test description of a feature (which will be a section of a unique GE unit testing page). (Pier to organize) ====================================== 4- WP11 deliverables . link: https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/exploitation/index.php/Main_Page . Complete the revision of GE's Business Description. (Henk/Serge to verify contents of Cloud Edge, still some section missing , e.g. standardization) . IPR management to be revised or filled in for each GE. (Task Leaders + Hans/Pier coordinating) . Individual exploitation plans: strictly this is not a I2ND task, however please each partner to check that information for their Company is complete. . D11.3 "Market and Policy Regulation Awareness": inputs required from ALL PARTNERS to fill in tables at link https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/exploitation/index.php/market_and_policy_regulation_awareness ====================================== 5- Educational Weeks . Agenda: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArcymbqnpOfkdGJqeEFlblNEUkdxdkl2NW1sM0FWUUE#gid=0 . We have to fill the agenda for I2ND sessions. Here is a proposal, according also to preferences/ratings by UCPs: = Monday 14-16 CDI (2h) = Tuesday 9-10.15 NetIC (1h15') 10.15-11:45 S3C (1h15' with coffee break in it, or postponed/anticipated) 11:45-12:45 CE (1h) jointly with Cloud . Agreement with Cloud chapter is on going. (Pier/Henk) . Feedback is required for this agenda proposal by tomorrow afternoon. (Task Coords/potential Participants) ====================================== 6- Further Items which will be discussed the I2ND confcall on Thursday (along with review of status for above activities) . GE's delivery . Feedback to Catalogue proposals lauched by WP9 . Lack of contribution to common activities (e.g. WP9 above, WP10, WP11) . Information on First Year Project Review For any doubt you should have please let me and Hans know, and we'll try to provide a comment/feedback as soon as possible, thanks. I have to confess that this has been a nice surprise (among other things, because it will help us to better focus our 1st year review by June 21-22) I haven't had time to read it completely, just a quick reading of the overall assessment. D2.3a, D2.4a, and D11.4a have been rejected and have to be re-submitted once detailed comments provided by the reviewers are addressed. The rest of deliverables are accepted though D.2.1.1 and D.1.3.1 with some reservations. The reviewers applaud the quality of the testbed design as documented in deliverable D10.1a. Regarding D2.3a and D2.4a, the following is said in the overall assessment: While much of the material produced for the key deliverable D2.3a is of good to very good quality, the level of quality is not consistent, with several major issues affecting deliverables D2.3a and D2.4a to the degree that remedial attention is required before they can be accepted. while regarding D11.4, the following is said in the overall assessment (probably we need to read the detailed comments to understand it better): deliverable D11.4a is also rejected due to a lack of clarity on how standardisation contributions will be properly aligned with one another Overall, the project is scored in the lower scale of acceptable progress so, definitively, we all have to devote the necessary resources to improve that score. I believe it is feasible if we carefully review the recommendations made in the review and implement the necessary remedy actions. Fortunately, some actions that have been already planned (e.g., educational sessions with the UC projects, dedicated team covering management of UC tickets, ...) are in this direction, but we will have to add some more. Please distribute among the members of your Chapter teams. Please bear in mind that we will have to justify them very well in the context of FI-PPP AB discussions. Note that Open Calls are expected "to allow for responding to emerging user needs not identified or known from the outset" according to the text of the FP7 work programme linked to the FI-PPP. Of course, "user needs != UC project needs" necessary in all cases. Besides a title for the topic, I would appreciate that you send a brief justification for each of the proposed topics in terms of what is actually expected. I would like to have a preliminary but complete list by end of this week that I can share with rest of members of the FI-PPP AB. Please react accordingly. For example in the DoW D12 is not a WP7 deliverable. I apologize also for not attending physical meetings which probably would have helped. May I have three kind requests that in fact are not specific to Fi-Ware WP7, and also one suggestion? (1) In other projects were I was involved, the work on deliverable starts at least two months before the official deadline, and often we took two weeks more just to review the deliverable internally before releasing it to the Project Management Team. We took also extra time in case holidays were in the middle of the planned work time. (2) We had also a clear view of who needs to work, what she had to do, and when it is due. (3) My last request is that I am lost in all documents, where they are, what is important or not. In addition the number of documents to read just as informative documents or "how to" is really huge. One shouldn't expect us to read all that. I suggest that we decide to have a clear structure for documents and only one place to find all WP7 important documents. Here is a proposal: ? Folder for WP7 conf-call and physical minutes o Currently conf-call can be accessed at https://forge.fi-ware.eu/docman/?group_id=10# and I am fine with that, but the folder structure is not explicit. o Physical meeting minutes are elsewhere in the same page in the structure and do not include all meetings (Turin and Madrid are missing) ? Folder for deliverables where W7 is involved. There is no dedicated folder at the moment. o D1, o D2, o ... Suggestion: My understanding is that there is some mismatch between what WP7 wants to provide, what service projects wait from us and what the Dow states. Therefore I suggest that we have some thoughts about making our diverse sets of APIs, one unique set at the WP level and being much more simple, homogeneous, and canonical. I think we have to take in account the connectivity problem also (contrary to our previous stance on the subject). This will result has having the two following advantage for us: o Internally I am pretty sure it will show non functional aspects that certainly exist but are not addressed at the moment. It will also help in relation to other WPs (security?). o Externally our APIs will be much more easy to understand and it will be easier to sell them to stakeholders. I'll try to provide you an answer to (almost) all questions and issues you raise. Frist of all, there are deliverables that do not belong to WP7, but e.g. to WP2, WP10, WP11 or WP12. If you go to the DoW, nearly all the partners have resources allocated to those WPs, and therefore it is required that technical chapters contribute to them, because most of the times the information requested strongly refers to their activity technical activity. Other times the request is to the single partners, so in this case if there should resources allocated to those WPs only. As a matter of fact, for most of the partners, there is a superposition of people working both on the technical and on the general WPs. (1) Your're right, work on deliverables should be planned well in advance, e.g. two months, so that we could prepare all the contributions not in a hurry. We highlighted this in a recent WPL/WPA. We hope to have more efficient planning for next deliverables. (2) That's a good point: sometimes however it happens that, after a request to contribute to some activity, we don't get the necessary feedback on time, which creates troubles in managing the work to be done. Second thing, the extreme heterogeneous nature of our GEs calls for specific knowledge on a lot of different technical aspects, which are not always part of own background (myself too have some trouble in understanding all such details for all four GEs). Moreover, in some cases it seems to me there is not (yet) a good integration of the contributions of single partners, leading to uncertainty in the definition of a clear objective, and consequently a workplan. We'll try and improve anyway this aspects, because they are of extreme importance. Probably now that we finish the set of contributions for the first release, it should be easier to organize the activities. (3) This is another critical topic. First of all, the Forge repository is ok for minutes, presentations, etc. It is NOT the tool to manage the deliverables. It was decided (well imposed...) to use the wiki as means to contribute to the creation of documents, so each deliverable is living in thoe wiki(es). And here comes the actual trouble: too many different wikies: I2ND private, fi-ware-wiki-private, fi-ware public, exploitation, integration... This creates confusion. We'll need to address it, however it is expected that all the public deliverables will be created in the fiware public wiki (we need to define where to provide the drafts/working copies, i.e. in fi-ware-private wiki or I2ND private one) and not in Forge folders. Finally about your suggestions: If I have understood well your proposal, I don't agree to have a unique set of APIs for the WP: I find it already difficult to have a homogeneous set of APIs per GE, I cannot imagine that we have a uniform and simple set of API per the entire WP7! I see that even in S3C there is not a uniform APIs description, according to the architecture defined so far. This is propbably because we artificially decided to keep different, heterogenous functionalities together in a single GE, while we should have split them into separate GEs. We can still decide to go for this solution, but definitely I cannot see a unique kind of APIs for all the GEs. Anyway, discussion on these points is open, I invite all to provide other views and contributions. We those of you present in Zurich next week, we can try to analyse the different comments and proposals. Have all a nice week-end! Sometimes they even mention mesh and ad hoc networks, which are IMO not in I2ND scope. In a few cases they are interested by security and privacy on Telecom networks. Often they discuss about "cloud" maybe without realizing this is also a Telecom subject (at least to reach the cloud). Better understanding what "cloud" means for us and having a set of functionalities for that, may be a way to increase I2ND visibility and awareness. The most interested project in Telecom networks seems to be the Smart Agri Food UC project. I tried to separate "market overview" and "vendors" sections, but there can be an overlap (e.g. the Google WAN, i.e., their entire internal inter-Data Center backbone, is running on OpenFlow switches since the end of 2010, the old network was shut down is kind of market overview, but as they built their own switches from merchant silicon (because there weren't any on the market at the time, but they would love to buy them from large vendors), it is somehow vendor related as well. Br, Jozsef Vendor Description Vello Systems Focus on WAN (Inter-DC connections) and Carrier network related use-cases, exponential growth of SDN market expected Vello has developed their own Network OS called VellOS Carrier Network use-case: Seamless roaming between 3G/4G + WIFI, dynamic partitioning of access points and cell radios Juniper promote QFabric as a solution for SDN, Codonis (large DC provider) uses that (but they are also looking for OpenFlow-based solutions) Nicira, Big Switch Startups in SDN arena, Nicira develops Open vSwitch, Big Switch focuses on controller NEC They have their own OpenFlow-based SDN solution (supports network virtualization) One of the Japanese carriers will deploy a world-wide virtual network solution soon. SDN market overview Google, IBM, Yahoo SDN for Network-as-a-Service and network virtualization in DC and between DCs. Google Google announced that they rebuilt their entire internal inter-DC backbone (called the G-Scale network) using OpenFlow switches. They built their own switches, because there weren't any on the market, but they would love to buy them from large vendors. Started to add centralized TE in January. They experienced: higher network utilization (caused the flexible management), better network monitoring and testing, high degree of stability, meets the SLA requirements. The presenter (VP of Google) said he believed that current big networking equipment providers will lead the transition to SDN. They found the central controller solution more secure than the legacy architecture. Verizon They have used an SDN-like architecture for their video distribution services (in IMS). They plan to further optimize it with an OpenFlow-based solution. They need to support multiple network domains in the future. Meanwhile, I remind you all that the I2ND PhC tomorrow is confirmed (we should stay in one hour max, so 10-11 CEST), main topics are those exposed in this mail. - Review Report: we need to provide our inputs asap. Support in reporting everything to be highlighted about the different GEs, by sending (at least) a short description for the expected items in the MSWord template attached. *Deadline May 25!* For first draft we can be a little short in description: I'll personally take care of the global descriptions, while *Every Task Coord has to fill the table concerning the owned Task*. Data about efforts will be updated later. - D11.1 - Market Competition Analysis --> Contribution concerning I2ND GEs (one complete set of following sections per GE) 5.5.1 Market Overview 5.5.2 Vendors 5.5.3 Services 5.5.4 Value Chain 5.5.5 SWOT Analysis *Every Task/GE Coord* to provide inputs for each section above. Unfortunately Henrik is not available in these days, so I'll personally coordinate the collection of data. Document template (with examples from other chapters) is attached as well (Task Coords have it already!). Deadline (yesterday...) May 25! - D11.3 IPR management to be revised. *Pier, Chris, Henk* to follow instructions of attached mail by accessing the link https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/exploitation/index.php/IPR_Interface_to_Networks_and_Devices acting consequently wherever necessary in the pages/sub-pages concerning I2ND chapter. Deadline: May 25! - Testbed V1 --> Send mail about no dependencies for CE. *Henk/Technicolor should confirm* to Pier that there are not dependencies for the CE in first release of FI-WARE, and we'll jointly send a mail to WP10 Coord stating this to be put in page at link https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/testbed/index.php/Interface_to_Network_and_Devices_%28I2ND%29_-_Test_Cases_-_V1 . Now! Hope this is sufficiently clear and practical to face these topics in the easiest (!) way. We'll surely check the status tomorrow in the confcall, at least with those who are not involved in the educational week currently going on in Zurich. I apologise if some of you were not in this email list, it's because I didn't ask to add you since I thought you were not involved in it. Moreover, the agenda of the week is available on the usual shared page (see below the link)since two weeks ago, and is rather steady as far as I know, so also the dates where we should be attending to provide our presentations is well defined. Also UCPs have access to this, and they are well informed about the contents, distribution and duration of the event(s). Definitely we need to be there on Monday afternoon and Tuesday whole day, those who can stay more can hear from UCPs their presentations in the remaining part of the week. For sure some more details would be helpful to avoid e.g. going to a place where nobody knows there is a large meeting lasting the whole week (this happened to those of us who first arrived in ZHAW...), and I hope the situation will be better this time. Finally, I agree that the mechanism of spreading the information needs to be improved, for instance creating the ad-hoc fiware-training list for me was not a winning solution. I'll raise the issue in the coordination calls. To summarise: Link to location is http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?client=tmpg&hl=en&langpair=es%7Cen&rurl=translate.google.com&twu=1&u=http://www.etsit.upm.es/la-escuela/como-llegar.html&usg=ALkJrhiGwDrORuqzUH_3NmMTmggpluGHoA Link to agenda of the event is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArcymbqnpOfkdGJqeEFlblNEUkdxdkl2NW1sM0FWUUE#gid=1 Hope this dissipates most of the uncertainties. It is really embarrassing that less than one week before start of the event there is no logistics information, no invitation, no detail information! And, by the way, this situation also highlights the current situation in FI-WARE... It seems, there is nobody really caring for organization in this project. Why the hell any use case project should attend an educational event if FI-WARE is not able to present them the minimum logistic's information??????????? FI-WARE should not complain about scarce attendance to such a meeting (like Zurich) if it is not able to provide basic support. Please read in detail the two mails below (starting with the older one); although in I2ND this first release is concerning the Cloud Edge GE only (Henk/Serge, can you tell me what's the status for this GE?), we need to rapidly progress updating the structure of the 'Materializing the FI-WARE vision' for all the GEs, independent of the need to provide a Unit Testing plan for them. I'll try to create a 'diagram'/picture of the different links and references, I believe a graphical view of the final structuring would help understanding it better. The roadmap should instead indicate the delivery schedule for precise Generic Enablers, which should then be described in terms of the abilities they will provide. By making a link to the appropriate chapter within "Materializing the FI-WARE Vision" from each of the chapter sections within the Technical Roadmap deliverable, these comments by the reviewers would be addressed. Actually, nobody would be able to keep these complains because because the list of Features that will be supported by each of our FI-WARE GEs would be detailed. Cheers, -- Juanjo On 28/05/12 23:34, Juanjo Hierro wrote: Dear all, As you know, a Unit Testing Plan deliverable has to be produced for each of the GEs to be released as part of the first FI-WARE Release. Note that this Unit Testing Plan has nothing to do with the Integration Testing Plan which has been asked by the Testbed Chapter team. The approach proposed to tackle this deliverable was initially shared in April 10th, and was approved after the integration of some of the compiled comments during the joint WPLs/WPAs confcall that took place in May 7th. Here, we will try to elaborate on the details about how to generate this deliverable per GE on the public wiki. The very first step will be extend the set of Features listed for each GE within the corresponding section of the "Materializing the FI-WARE Vision" part of the public wiki. As per now, each GE was supposed to have already a number of Features, Epics and User-Stories listed on the "Materializing the FI-WARE Vision" part of the wiki. However, listed Features were supposed to only map to new features to be incorporated in the baseline assets for the first FI-WARE Release (i.e., features that required some sort of development on the baseline asset). Now, we will extend these list of Features so that the whole list of Features provide a comprehensive and complete description of the set of features that will be supported by the GE in the first FI-WARE Release. Note that with this first step, we hope that we will be able to address some of the comments made by reviewers on the "FI-WARE Technical Roadmap" deliverable, arguing that the information provided in that deliverable was too abstract (see [1]). Making this first step, we will be able to add a link to the set of features to be supported by each FI-WARE GE from the "FI-WARE Technical Roadmap" deliverable. This way, the argument about lack of concreteness should fly away. Once we have completed the set of Features for a given GE and listed them within the corresponding section inside the "Materializing the FI-WARE Vision" part of the wiki, we will create a last section, right after the section listing the User-Stories, that will be titled "Unit Testing Plan" and will contain a link to a wiki page describing the Unit Testing Plan that will be applied to the GE. This wiki page will be titled " - Unit Testing Plan" and will be structured into one section titled "Information Common to all tests" and then several sections, each linked to a Unit Test. Each Unit Test, will contain: * a subsection titled "Tested Features" which contains a list of links to the wiki pages describing the Features that are tested through the Unit Test * a subsection titled "Test description" which contains detailed information about: * what client programs and (potentially) data sets will be used to run the test * how to run the test: * this should be detailed enough to allow an administrator/operator of a FI-WARE Instance to test if the GE is working properly * dependencies on third party libraries or software should be specified * expected results to be obtained by running the client programs with the referred data set * (note: it would be highly recommended to define a maven project which would be used to run the test and where all dependencies are specified Note that a separate Unit Test may be defined per tested Feature. However, this is not mandatory so a given Unit Test may be used to test several features. What is important is that the Test description provides the information that is needed to run the tests, not only by the developer of the GE but also by any party (e.g., an administrator/operator of a FI-WARE Instance containing that GE) who decides to use the Unit Testing Plan to verify that the GE is working properly in a given FI-WARE Instance setup. A link to the corresponding section in the Unit Testing Plan document at the wiki will be included in a "how-to-test" field of the corresponding backlog entry. We will soon inform you whether this field will be created in the template linked to Features descriptions in the public Wiki or in the ticket at the tracker that corresponds to the Feature. We couldn't provide a reference example of the formula described above because the wiki was down, but we hope to provide it along this week. Nevertheless, don't hesitate to make any question or complement this proposal. Your input is more than welcome. Please, share these instructions with members of your respective teams.
