Hi,

The enclosed info is collected at the last Open Networking Summit (mid April 2012, see http://opennetsummit.org/index.html, some (all?) presentation videos are also available, e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLHJUfgxEO4) focusing on Software Defined Networks.

I tried to separate "market overview" and "vendors" sections, but there can be an overlap (e.g. the Google WAN, i.e., their entire internal inter-Data Center backbone, is running on OpenFlow switches since the end of 2010, the old network was shut down is kind of market overview, but as they built their own switches from merchant silicon (because there weren't any on the market at the time, but they would love to buy them from large vendors), it is somehow vendor related as well.

Br,

Jozsef

Vendor Description

Vello Systems Focus on WAN (Inter-DC connections) and Carrier network related use-cases, exponential growth of SDN market expected

Vello has developed their own Network OS called VellOS

Carrier Network use-case: Seamless roaming between 3G/4G + WIFI, dynamic partitioning of access points and cell radios

Juniper promote QFabric as a solution for SDN, Codonis (large DC provider) uses that (but they are also looking for OpenFlow-based solutions)

Nicira, Big Switch Startups in SDN arena, Nicira develops Open vSwitch, Big Switch focuses on controller

NEC They have their own OpenFlow-based SDN solution (supports network virtualization) One of the Japanese carriers will deploy a world-wide virtual network solution soon.

SDN market overview

Google, IBM, Yahoo SDN for Network-as-a-Service and network virtualization in DC and between DCs.

Google Google announced that they rebuilt their entire internal inter-DC backbone (called the G-Scale network) using OpenFlow switches. They built their own switches, because there weren't any on the market, but they would love to buy them from large vendors. Started to add centralized TE in January. They experienced: higher network utilization (caused the flexible management), better network monitoring and testing, high degree of stability, meets the SLA requirements. The presenter (VP of Google) said he believed that current big networking equipment providers will lead the transition to SDN. They found the central controller solution more secure than the legacy architecture.

Verizon They have used an SDN-like architecture for their video distribution services (in IMS). They plan to further optimize it with an OpenFlow-based solution. They need to support multiple network domains in the future.

Br,

Jozsef

Dear Hans,

thanks for starting the paper contribution... Please find attached an updated version with some ALU-D contributions.

I would propose that we combine 7.3 and 7.4 contribs also in the 1.1.5 SWOT analysis (as you already did it for the 1.1.4 value chain).

BR,

Thomas

P.S.: if found useful we could have a telephone call this afternoon on the paper contribution; I will be in office until about 17:30...

Dear all,

Please find attached the first draft of the deliverable D11.1.

Comments are highly welcome - please note: Germany is closed down completely on Monday.

I have tried to write it from an operator perspective.

Many thanks for the contributions.

Cheers,

Hans
