[Fiware-testbed] provisioning of KVM images (was: RE: Provisional servers for Testbed)

Dear colleagues,
In WP3 there is some uncertainties concerning the provisioning of KVM images:

Basically, the colleagues from Telecom Italia can provide vmware images, but no KVM images: https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/testbed/index.php/Mediator_TelecomItalia

Do we as Testbed support the creation of KVM images and who is responsible for this?

Best,
                                                                /Thorsten

Hi Stefano,
I need this information until Monday, EOB, if possible - on Tuesday I could already trigger the work in Apps&Services and we should definitely leverage the momentum.
If I should address the questions to respective other people, please forward accordingly.

1. What virtual machine container do the FIWARE work packages need to prepare for V1? (all of the following or only one of them: Xen/VMWARE/KVM/.... - please take into account that partially the vitual machine software is to be licenced, e.g. vmware)

2. When is the earliest (confirmed) date when the WP can install the image on (any) infrastructure? (1st of july, right?)

3. Until when do the chapters have time to finish the filled out GETemplates based on https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/testbed/index.php/Template:GETestbedRequirements inside of the Cockpit https://forge.fi-ware.eu/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/testbed/index.php/Testbed_V1_Implementation_Cockpit?

Thanks for any comments.

                                                                /Thorsten

Hi Stefano,
As discussed in our weekly phc, I'm approaching you again on this topic via mail:

Could you please investigate & confirm the needed information below?

And another (third) question:

Thanks in advance & best regards,

                                                                /Thorsten

Dear colleagues,
I was asked to give feedback to the preparation of virtual images for one WP, as proposed by Stefano, the WP need to start compiling and at least internally testing the vms in june.

Thanks for clarifying.

dear juanjo and miguel,

thank you for the news, they are not ideal, but much more than nothing and at least we can concretely move ahead!

as a plan, as you can see from my eamil of yesterday evening, we are going to have 40 different ges to run on the testbed and most of them declared to be ready to be installed within july. not yet clear how many environments we have to build for the uc projects (most likely we will not need 8 different complete testbed instances ...).

so the only step we can do in june is to create the needed vms with the sw environment ready for each specific ge and than store their images and download them. this way in july we can istall, restoring each vm, the ge.

as i see quite doubtfull that we can run all the 40 instances together using these three servers we can only run the sanithy check hoping that on 1st september we have the promised infrastructute needed for having all the ge running together to make the integration tests and than the various uc projects validation.

certainly if in august we do not have the promised infrastructure than we are in real troubles, still i hope this is not the case.
if you need my help, to meet red.es<http://red.es> people to motivate them, please let me know i'll be more than happy to help!

ciao,
stefano

Hi,

Just a small (but I guess important) detail. Red.es will setup a virtual LAN that will connect their facilities in Madrid (therefore, the servers they will provisionally let us to use) with the places where servers will be hosted for the FI-WARE Testbed. This will make things a lot easier since it will not matter whether a server is in Madrid or some other datacenter.

  Regards,

Dear Stefano,

I have fresh info from the Testbed (at last!). I have little time so I will go straight to the point:

1) TIMING
===============================
The public administration is always slow buying things. I have been told that all is waiting for the approval of the legal department and then it would go to the formal signature + publication. After then, there are a number of steps. I will not provide intermediate details, as they are irrelevant, the conclusion of all the info I have is that we would wait for 1,5 months more, which is too much.

We have asked for a provisional solution and they have obliged.

2) CONTINGENCY PLAN
===============================
Until we have the definite infrastructure, we will use a provisional one located in Madrid.

We will have three identical servers, with 8GB of RAM, almost 1TB of RAID disks. They will be accessible at the beginning of next week.

The machines will be configured with a service interface to gigabit ethernet and an ILOM management interface. We will have access to the management interface to be able to manage the functionality of Remote KVM, and Virtual Media to install the software on the machines.

I enclose the datasheet they have provided for the provisional servers(in Spanish). I searched on the internet and it seems a translation from his one (I would compare to make 100% sure it but I have no time now!).:

Hope this clarifies a bit the situation.

Have a nice weekend.
